Heartland XV team to take on New Zealand Marist announced

allblacks.com     14 Oct 2011

Head Coach Grainger Heikell says the squad features a blend of experienced and new players, with Jason Rickard (captain) representing the Heartland XV for the fourth time.

“We have a determined mix of players – many of whom will wear the coveted Heartland XV black jersey for the first time and all are relishing the opportunity to do their union and heartland New Zealand proud,” he said.

“This week’s build-up has been intense for the squad as we haven’t beaten a Marist XV in the last two years – but the team are up for it.

“The Heartland Championship has been an excellent feature of the REAL New Zealand Festival, and this fixture will be a great way to showcase the Heartland players’ skills.

“The fact the boys are taking to the field on the afternoon of the first Rugby World Cup 2011 semifinal in Auckland hasn’t been lost on the group. They’ve been down to the Fanzone to soak up the atmosphere and are hoping visiting rugby fans kick-start their day with a trip Pukekohe for some great community rugby, he added.

The Heartland XV v New Zealand Marist XV will be played at Bayer Growers Stadium, Pukekohe on Saturday 15 October, kickoff at 2.30pm.
