While held tryless, the Hurricanes were in the game at 9-14 down until Mvovo's intercept finally quelled their resistance.
Sharks first five-eighths Patrick Lambie landed five penalty goals and a conversion with William Alberts and Mvovo scoring tries for the Sharks while Beauden Barrett landed two penalty goals and Marty Banks one from within his own half, for the Hurricanes.
The Sharks dominated the first half where they applied pressure through their scrum and had control of the lineouts. However, flanker Jack Lam, No.8 Blade Thompson and halfback TJ Perenara kept the pressure on with good displays.
One scrum penalty saw No.8 Ryan Kankowski take a quick tap and when the ball was moved fullback SP Marais knocked the ball on in the face of the Hurricanes' defensive efforts.
More fumbles denied the Sharks potential tries on at least two occasions but in the 19th minutes it was flanker Alberts who scored as the final act of a rolling maul from a lineout.
Barrett and Banks landed penalty goals late in the half to leave the Hurricanes down 6-10 at the break.
As goal-kicking took over, Lambie landed two penalty goals to one from Barrett before the territorial and possession dominance was rewarded through Mvovo.
Lambie rounded out the scoring with two later penalty goals.
The Hurricanes had a potential scoring chance of their own when wing Julian Savea charged down a kick which resulted in a five-metre scrum but the Sharks defence held. But the side were forced to play out time one man down after flanker Adam Hill was sin-binned for a tip tackle offence.
Sharks 27 (Willem Alberts, Lwazi Mvovo tries; Patrick Lambie con, 5 pen) Hurricanes 9 (Beauden Barrett 2, Marty Banks pen). HT: 10-6
