It is estimated that the number of visitors in New Zealand at any one time will peak at around 17,500 on 1 July 2017, which is the day of the second Test in Wellington.

Campervans are expected to be a popular mode of transport and accommodation during the Series for several of reasons, including convenience, pricing and availability of a traditional accommodation option, along with the flexibility and cost of a campervan package.

Lions Rugby Tours (LRT) and All Blacks Tours (ABT) have been granted exclusive rights to sell Lions campervan packages (campervan + match tickets), although some international visitors and domestic travellers are expected to hire a campervan and secure tickets independently, particularly during the early part of the tour when demand for match tickets is lower. ABT is still finalising its commercial arrangements with campervan companies, but at this stage expects to sell several campervan packages.

The research recommends planning for up to 1,200 campervans and 2,800 occupants during the Test match period of 24 June – 8 July. This allows for around 560 independently booked or privately-owned campervans. At this stage campervan demand is expected to peak on the day of the second Test in Wellington, but is likely to be strong throughout the Test match period.
