Taking on a Chiefs side bolstered by the return of All Blacks Brodie Retallick, Aaron Cruden, Anton Lienert-Brown and Tawera Kerr-Barlow, the Blues were too strong across the park in picking up a 26-14 victory.

In Waverley, Beauden and Jordie Barrett teamed together for the first time in the black and yellow colours as the Hurricanes pipped the Crusaders 33-27.

The Blues played a near-perfect first half at Alexandra Park to run in four tries for a 26-7 halftime lead over the Chiefs. Although they didn’t add to their tally in the second half, the Blues only conceded seven points in the second spell to secure the comprehensive win.

The Blues line speed on defence was particularly impressive, frustrating the Chiefs attack throughout the full 80 minutes

Chiefs coach Dave Rennie said: “"We've got a fair bit to get right in the next seven days. We certainly won't got into the Highlanders game overconfident."

In Waverley, there was little to separate the Hurricanes and Crusaders with both teams running in five tries each. New Crusaders recruit Seta Tamanivalu was impressive in crossing for a hat-trick while wing Wes Goosen grabbed a double for the Hurricanes.

Investec Super Rugby kicks off next Thursday night when the Blues take on the Rebels in Melbourne. On Friday night, the Highlanders and Chiefs clash at Forsyth Barr Stadium while the Hurricanes take on the Sunwolves in Tokyo on Saturday afternoon (NZT). The Crusaders are the final New Zealand team in action next weekend when they host the Brumbies on Saturday night.
