Drawn in a tough pool with Wales, Fiji and Japan, it was crucial that the All Blacks Sevens made a winning start on day one.

Wales have rapidly improved on the circuit over recent years and defended stoutly in the opening half to make it a 7-7 score line at halftime. In the second half, the All Blacks Sevens managed to find some gaps in the Welsh defence as they ran in tries to DJ Forbes and Beaudein Waaka to secure the win.

The All Blacks Sevens next face Japan at 4.50pm (NZT) on Saturday. Japan were crushed by Fiji 36-0 on day one but New Zealand only need look back to the 2016 Olympics to realise the threat Fiji pose. Day two is rounded out with a blockbuster clash against Fiji at 9.12pm NZT.
Elsewhere on day one, England’s Dan Norton became the world’s all-time top try scorer when he touched down for his 245th try in a clash against South Korea.
