After playing crucial roles in the Black Ferns 2017 Rugby World Cup success, loose forward Sarah Goss and wing Portia Woodman are worthy finalists in the Halberg sportswoman of the year. The talented duo will face stiff competition for the gong against Lisa Carrington (canoe racing) and Lydia Ko (Golf).
QUICK TAP: BLACK FERNS NAMED NEW ZEALANDERS OF THE YEAR
The Black Ferns made history last year by becoming the first women’s team to take out the World Rugby Team of the Year award and have the chance to pick up the Halberg Team of the Year award also.
They are up against the Black Sox (softball), Emirates Team NZ (Yachting) and the duo of Lisa Carrington and Caitlin Ryan (Canoe Racing) for the Team of the Year award.
Black Ferns coach Glenn Moore has also been acknowledged with a nomination in the coach of the year category. He has been nominated alongside Gary Hay (rowing), Gordon Walker (Canoe Racing) and Mark Sorenson (Softball).
The All Blacks will also be represented at the Halberg Awards through Beauden Barrett’s nomination in the Sportsman of the Year category.
Barrett amassed an impressive 168 points across 13 Tests in 2017 but faces the equally impressive trio of Brendon Hartley (Motorsport), Ross Taylor (Cricket) and Tom Walsh (Athletics) for the prize.
The awards will be held at a ceremony in Auckland on February 8.
