Bay of Plenty and Canterbury flex muscles at JHU19s

Bay of Plenty, the top qualifier from the Chiefs region, belted Hawke’s Bay 90-0, running in no less than 14 tries, including four to Bartje Wierenga and doubles to Lalomilo Lalomilo and Leroy Carter. Kaleb Trask, who has already seen Mitre 10 Cup action for the Steamers this season, slotted six conversions.

Canterbury, the 2015 champion, dispatched defending Premiership champion Auckland 37-8. Nick Frost scored a brace in the five tries to one victory.

Wellington defeated Taranaki 62-8 with nine tries to one, Callum Harkin and Taine Plumtree, son of Hurricanes coach John Plumtree, crossing for doubles. The capital boys now face Canterbury in Wednesday’s semifinal.

Top Blues qualifier North Harbour will face Bay of Plenty in the semifinal after edging Tasman 28-25.

In the Championship section, Counties Manukau remain on track for a fourth straight Michael Jones Trophy after beating Manawatu 27-22 in a see-saw struggle.Waikato ran in 11 tries in its 67-5 defeat of the Heartland XV, chosen from the 12 Heartland Championship unions.

The Auckland Development XV suffered a 29-22 reverse to Otago, who will face Counties Manukau in Wednesday’s semifinals.

Southland upset Northland 29-22, despite a 17-point haul by Northland’s Nikau Graham. The southerners now face Waikato in the semifinals.

Monday will see players take part in professional development and position specific coaching sessions.
