The team will play games against a Manawatu Area Selection side in Palmerston North on 30 September and a Waikato Selection team in Hamilton on 4 October. The last game of the season is an international against Australia in Auckland on 10 October.

The squad of 24 includes two current Air New Zealand Cup players – Hawke’s Bay fullback Israel Dagg and Manawatu wing Andre Taylor.

Christchurch Boys’ High School, winner of the 2006 National Schools’ First XV championship, has three representatives, as does this year’s beaten finalist Auckland Grammar School.

Five players from the 2005 team have been reselected. They are Liukanasi Manu (Christchurch BHS), Wayne Ngaluafe (Kelston BHS), Winston Stanley (Auckland Grammar School), Ken Pisi (Massey HS) and Sam Whitelock (Feilding HS).

Coventry said the standard of this year’s regional schools tournaments was high.

“I’ve seen some excellent rugby this year and all these players deserve to be in the squad. We are certainly excited about the upcoming matches,” Coventry said.

Coventry and Martin will name the captain later this month.

The squad features several players who have well-known relatives. Tauranga Boys’ College flanker Luke Braid is the son of former All Black Gary Braid and younger brother of Auckland and Blues loose forward Daniel Braid; wing Ken Pisi of Massey High School in Auckland is the brother of North Harbour players George and Tusi Pisi.

Auckland Grammar School midfield back Winston Stanley is the nephew of former All Black Joe Stanley and brother of former New Zealand age-grade player Benson Stanley and Feilding High School lock Sam Whitelock is the brother of 2005 New Zealand Under 19 captain George Whitelock.
