Poverty Bay victorious in Lochore Cup

sportal.co.nz     22 Oct 2006

Poverty Bay made all the early running, making the most of its opposite's turnovers as it launched a number of promising attacks into King Country's 22m.

Its efforts were rewarded after eight minutes when halfback Daniel Morath beat his opposite on the outside following a quick turnover. He did well to draw the fullback and put left wing Tim Gardner away untouched in the corner. First five-eighths Scott Leighton converted from wide out to give Poverty Bay an early 7-0 lead.

Morath laid on his side's second try five minutes later when he received the ball 15m out from the line, cut with fullback Kahu Tamatea, who finished the move to score under the posts.

King Country needed to score next, and it did with a beautifully constructed try from inside its own half. First five-eighths Hone Wanden broke from set play down the right hand touchline and fed a perfectly timed pass inside to right wing Paul Olsen to open his side's account after 16 minutes.

Penalty goals from both sides kept the margin at seven points before a converted try to Poverty Bay centre Wade Owen stretched his side's lead to 24-10 after 33 minutes.

A superb individual try to Leighton just before the break came as a huge psychological blow for King Country, the visitors heading to the sheds trailing 31-10 with the game slipping away.

Leighton scored another impressive try shortly after halftime, kicking ahead from 30m out and regathering a lucky bounce to beat Strang to the ball.

King Country began to claw its way back into the match, scoring four well-deserved tries in the next 30 minutes to come within nine points with six minutes remaining.

It was an intense final five minutes, as King Country inched towards the Poverty Bay tryline but was unable to snatch victory, Poverty Bay winning 46-34.
