The side will play matches against Samoa Schools A and Samoa Schools, with the final match against Australia Schools in New Plymouth on 10 October.

The squad of 23 includes five representatives from Hamilton Boys’ High School, one of whom was also in the squad last year. In total, six players from the 2007 squad were selected again this year. They are Willie Afuvai (Palmerston North BHS Manawatu), Nick Annear (Timaru BHS, South Canterbury), Kane Barrett (Francis Douglas Memorial College, Taranaki), Tawa Kerr-Barlow (Hamilton BHS, Waikato), Charlie Ngatai (Gisborne BHS, Poverty Bay) and Julian Savea (Rongotai College, Wellington).

Coach Hansen said this was an exciting squad.

“In terms of selection, we had to make some difficult decisions because we have a lot of talented young players coming through the schoolboy ranks.

“Looking ahead to our games, Australia will be tough and Samoa are difficult opponents and even stronger on their home turf but it is an exciting challenge for us,” Hansen said.

The captain will be confirmed in due course.

The New Zealand Schools squad will assemble at Auckland Grammar on Monday 22 September.
