NZ Schools kick off campaign in style     06 Oct 2008

Captain Julian Savea (Rongotai College) broke the Samoa defence in the 14th minute to score the team’s first try. New Zealand Coach Grant Hansen said the NZ scrum was totally dominant throughout the game, which put real pressure on the Samoan team.

“Considering the very hot and humid conditions, and given it was our first game, I was very pleased with the result. We have areas to work on, but when this team gets things right they are very exciting.”

New Zealand went on to score a further six tries including a double to Glen Robertson from Hamilton Boy’s High School. Blade Thomson (Gisborne Boy’s High School) showed he was a player to watch scoring an outstanding individual try. The outside backs also displayed an impressive performance, equally supported by the loose forward trio of Carl Atkins (Reporoa College), Luke Whitelock (Fielding High School) and Joseph Tupe (De La Salle College).

New Zealand has one more game to play in Apia against Samoa Schools on Friday. Then they head home to play a one-off international against Australia Schools in New Plymouth on 8 October.
