John Schwalger

Schwalger forced his way in to the starting Wellington Lions line-up during the 2005 Air New Zealand NPC season, and his performances resulted in Hurricanes selection in the following year. He spent the 2006 Air New Zealand Cup learning the ropes at tight-head prop and is now equally adept on either side of the scrum. Schwalger was a New Zealand Under 21s representative in 2004. Career Notes • Scored his first Rebel Sport Super 14 try in the Hurricanes’ round-robin season-closing match against the Waratahs in Sydney. Doubled as his first first-class try. • Came off the bench in Wellington’s match against the 2005 British & Irish Lions. • Is a cousin of current All Black and Hurricanes teammate Chris Masoe, and a nephew of Wellington hooker Mahonri Schwalger.
