A solid all-round forward with the skills to play in the No 6 position our sure up the engine room at lock. He is known for his great lineout skills, as well as his leadership on and off the field. Gibbes made his debut for the All Blacks in 2004 after a huge year in the Rebel Sport Super 14. He went on to be selected for the end-of-year tour to Europe but a calve injury suffered at training before the first Test against Italy ruled him out of the tour. The Chiefs captain for the fifth straight season, he has enjoyed great form with Waikato, playing in every game during Waikato's successful Air New Zealand Cup campaign. In the middle of last year, Gibbes captained the New Zealand Maori team to their second Churchill Cup title in three years. Gibbes made the New Zealand Under-21s for two straight seasons in 1997 and 1998 but didn't make his representative debut for Waikato until 2000 due to an unfortunate run of injuries.
