Exciting young player Theresa Fitzpatrick is a powerful ball carrier with explosive speed off the mark and has provided an injection of new talent into the Black Ferns in 2017.
The versatile Fitzpatrick – who performs well at second five-eighth and at centre – was described by Coach Glenn Moore as a player who has “got some pace and some real skills and attributes around those positions. She’s a strong defender and she thoroughly deserves her selection.”
A provincial champion with the Auckland Storm, Fitzpatrick has been playing rugby for years, starting out at the famed Ponsonby Club in Under 10s. After joining the Auckland Sevens programme in 2013, Fitzpatrick made her Black Ferns Sevens debut in 2016 at the Atlanta Sevens. She took time off from her medical studies to give sevens her best shot and it paid off with selection for Rio and a historic silver medal at the Olympic Games.
She is the sister of former Silver Fern and Samoan Sevens player Sulu Tone-Fitzpatrick.
