North Harbour powerhouse Rebecca Wood joined the Black Ferns for the first time in 2017, with the talented lock picked to provide extra strength in the set pieces. Wood made her debut in the second match of the International Women's Rugby Series, helping the team retain the Laurie O'Reilly Memorial Trophy in Christchurch against Australia.
Wood started out playing in Auckland in 2014 before heading across the bridge to play for East Coast Bays RFC and North Harbour Hibiscus, for whom she played every game during the 2016 Farah Palmer Cup and where her skilful performances caught the eye of the Black Ferns selectors.
In announcing her selection in May 2017, Coach Glenn Moore said he’d been impressed with Wood’s depth of character and resilience as well as her skill.
“Becky is a firefighter and she has a lot of courage. She was someone we had on our radar last year. She’s fairly new to the game, but leading up to this her talent and character really stood out.”
