Ross Filipo

Ross Filipo made his New Zealand Maori debut against New South Wales in 2006. A year later he made his debut for the All Blacks against Canada. A Wellingtonion, Filipo has made a name for himself in Christchurch, playing for the Crusaders in the Rebel Sport Super 14 since 2004. In 2006 he scored three tries against Western Force for the Crusaders, making him the first lock in more than a decade to score a Super 14 hat-trick. An athletic, mobile lock, Filipo provides an excellent lineout option and a powerful presence with the ball in hand. Initially selected for the Junior All Blacks in 2007, Filipo appeared in the first three matches of the IRB Pacific Nations Cup, dotting down for tries against Samoa and Tonga. A powerful ball carrier who uses his 115kg frame expertly, he first surfaced on the representative scene six years ago as a loan player for Marlborough. Standing 1.98cm tall, Filipo actually played fullback and first five-eighths at school. Using his height advantage, he soon switched to lock, but can also play on the blindside. He came through the Wellington ranks after playing for the province’s B team in 2001 and 2002 and the Hurricanes Development side in 2002 and 2003. Filipo played in the New Zealand Secondary Schools team in 1997 alongside his Crusaders teammate Campbell Johnstone, former New Zealand Sevens representative Orene Ai'i and former All Black Carl Hayman.
