Of Ngati Awa descent Hikawera Elliot – often known as Hika – has an impressive rugby resume. Powerful, agile and mobile, he is a talented player who is a useful exponent of the modern style of hooking play.
Elliot was captain of the New Zealand Schools team, was part of the Under 19 World Championship-winning New Zealand Under 19 team in 2004 and made his Maori All Blacks debut in 2008 against Tonga. In 2008 was called into the All Blacks end of year tour squad in 2008 as injury cover and played against Munster. He earned All Blacks re-selection in 2010 and Elliot won his Test cap against Scotland in Edinburgh but didn’t appear again until 2012.
The reliable hooker was also a key part of the Chiefs squad that won back-to-back Investec Super Rugby titles and in 2013 secured the Ranfurly Shield with Counties Manukau, in his first season with the ITM Cup Premiership side. He represented the Maori All Blacks again in 2013.
Rugby isn't the only sport to benefit from Elliot’s power and athleticism. He has a black belt in kung fu and represented New Zealand in age grade basketball.
In 2015, Elliot brought up his Super Rugby century. Elliot was rewarded for his strong form for the Chiefs in 2017 with a place in the Maori All Blacks squad to face the British & Irish Lions.
