Ngai Tahu-linked Joe Wheeler earned selection for the first time in the Maori All Blacks in 2013, securing a spot on the North America Tour with some compelling performances for Championship-winning Tasman in the ITM Cup, including taking over the Makos’ captaincy when required. He played in both matches on the North American Tour.
He was in impressive form again in 2014, with his skills on attack – including a nifty offload – a big part of Tasman’s fantastic 2014 season in the ITM Cup Premiership.
The big ball runner can play both lock and loose forward and is a key lineout jumper who provides a safe target for any hooker. He has played for the Crusaders and the Highlanders in Super Rugby.
