Tamati Ellison made his New Zealand Maori debut at the 2007 Churchill Cup tournament in England and a year later was named Co-captain of the side for the Pacific Nations Cup.

A versatile player who can play first-five, midfield or fullback, Ellison has represented the Junior All Blacks and New Zealand at Under 19 and 21 level. Not only has he excelled in fifteens, but in 2006 he was a member of the New Zealand side that won gold at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. He is affiliated to the Ngati Porou iwi.
