He has played for the New Zealand Under 19 and Under 21 sides (alongside younger brother Owen) and first played for Canterbury in 2005 before making nine appearances for Tasman.
Since making his Rebel Sport Super 14 debut in 2006 Franks has become a regular starter and formed a reputation as a solid and reliable scrummager. The 24-year-old Franks is Aranui High School’s first All Black.
2009 saw Franks miss much of the season with a foot injury.
However strong form in the 2010 Rebel Sport Super 14 saw the prop earn a recall to the All Blacks test squad, and the season also saw him score his first try in the competition, notching his maiden five pointer against the Cheetahs in his 43rd Super rugby match.
