MAN OF THE MATCH in the All Blacks thrilling RWC 2011 semifinal against the Wallabies, Cory Jane shows all of the hallmarks of a great winger: seering pace, dazzling footwork, reliability under the high ball and solid defence.
Upper Hutt’s first All Black made his Test debut in the first offshore Bledisloe Cup Test in Hong Kong in 2008. His selection continued a national representative career which included a rugby sevens gold medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
Jane seems to have been on the New Zealand rugby scene for a long time but despite making his provincial debut in 2003 he is still only 25 and has already played for New Zealand Maori and Junior All Black sides.
After starring in New Zealand’s Commonwealth Games Gold medal win in 2006 he made his Rebel Sport Super 14 debut for the Hurricanes the following year and also went on to top a century of points for the Wellington Lions and win their Player of the Year Award.
Usually at fullback but also seen on the wing, Jane’s pace and ability to beat a marker makes him a dangerous attacker and he is often the source for the tries run in by his outsides.
He is closing in on a century of points for the Wellington Lions and scored six tries for them in the 2008 Air New Zealand Cup.
In 2009 Jane fulfilled the criteria of the All Blacks vision of the modern three quarter, playing between fullback and wing with a brilliant year which he came of age as a member of the team.
