Young Waikato halfback Brendon Leonard has earned an All Blacks call-up after just one season of Rebel Sport Super 14 rugby.

Leonard escaped the attention of most national age-grade selectors: he was chosen for the New Zealand Schools side in 2002 but did not take the field.

Starting in the No 9 jersey while Byron Kelleher was on All Blacks duty, Leonard made an impression during the 2006 Air New Zealand Cup campaign, with decisive attacking play and a high-energy, opportunistic approach to the game.

Career Comments:

- Equalled the Chiefs record for tries in a match with three in the team's 2007 Rebel Sport Super 14 match against the Western Force, after coming on as a replacement player.

- Scored a try in both the semifinal and final of the 2006 Air New Zealand Cup for champions Waikato, despite starting in neither match

- Father Ron Leonard played 20 games for Waikato between 1973 - 80
