Owen Franks has risen through the Canterbury age grade ranks from his selection for the Canterbury Under 16 side, through to Under 19 level, culminating in being chosen for the Canterbury Development Squad.

Owen Franks has risen through the Canterbury age grade ranks from his selection for the Canterbury Under 16 side, through to Under 19 level, culminating in being chosen for the Canterbury Development Squad.

His selection for the New Zealand Under 21 side is his first time to represent New Zealand.

When he isn't playing rugby, Franks studies carpentry at Polytech in Christchurch.

A tighthead of increasing prowess, Franks has become the foundation in which an impressive Crusaders scrum has been built on, and as a consequence his selection in the All Blacks too many seemed to be a fait accompli.

In 2009 the older of the Franks brothers would continue his development with strong campaigns for the Crusaders and Canterbury, going on to feature for the All Blacks in eight test matches for the year.  He is now essentially engaged with a compelling battle with Neemia Tialata for the right to be recognised as the first choice All Blacks tighthead.
