The Team

The Maori All Blacks team is a selection of the best of New Zealand's Maori rugby players and boasts a proud history of defeating national sides. At matches in New Zealand in 2010 to mark one hundred years of Maori All Blacks rugby, the team defeated Ireland and England, having added the British & Irish Lions to their impressive tally of scalps in 2005. Many members go on to play for the All Blacks or have been All Blacks.

The team aims to provide an aspirational pathway for young Maori rugby players. The first Maori All Blacks were officially selected in 1910. However, the 1888 New Zealand Natives team, one of the first of New Zealand's national rugby teams and the first to wear the famous black jersey, was originally conceived as an all-Maori selection and ultimately included just five non-Maori players in its ranks.
