Heartland XV squad announced

allblacks.com     03 Oct 2011

The squad features eight players from Meads Cup Finalists Wanganui, while the Heartland Championship current top points scorer Scott Norton (South Canterbury) has also been named in the squad.

The squad which includes eight players from last year’s Heartland XV was announced by NZRU Chairman Mike Eagle on Radio Sport this afternoon.

Mr Eagle said having a high standard grassroots competition running at the same time as Rugby World Cup 2011 was great for the game.

“The Heartland Championship has been an excellent feature of the REAL New Zealand Festival; with the teams and the communities behind them providing a strong voice to the stadium of four million.

“Taking on the New Zealand Marist XV on the afternoon of the Rugby World Cup semifinal will provide international visitors with a timely opportunity to soak up some competitive grassroots rugby.

Head Coach Grainger Heikell said the team will be looking forward to representing their unions and showcasing the competitive Heartland Competition.

“We have named a strong team with a great mix of experience and youth and I know the players will be relishing the opportunity to whet fans’ rugby appetites in advance of the semifinal at Eden Park.

The Heartland XV v New Zealand Marist XV will be played at Bayer Growers Stadium, Pukekohe on Saturday 15 October, kickoff at 2.30pm.
