Basson, who along with Andre Taylor scored 10 tries this season, was injured during the Bulls' playoffs game in Christchurch and left the field. He was operated on at 3am on Sunday morning after the game and missed the flight home as he needs to stay in hospital for another five days.
Team doctor Org Strauss, who will stay with Basson in Christchurch until they return home, told Supersport.com: "Bjorn took a knock to the stomach, we think it was in a tackle that he got a knee or a hard hit and he had to have his small intestine reattached.
The injury means Basson will not be considered for South Africa's first two games in the Rugby Championship which are against Argentina.
During the game Bulls first five-eighths Morne Steyn kicked a penalty goal to become the second person to pass 1200 points in Super Rugby. Dan Carter, who scored 23 points in the game, heads the list with 1365 points.
Meanwhile, the Crusaders set a team record of most penalty goals in a Super Rugby season when Dan Carter's last kick was the side's 62nd penalty goal. Carter contributed 13 penalty goals, Tom Taylor 37 and Tyler Bleyendaal 12. The Stormers had kicked 61 penalty goals last year.
