Pocock has been ruled out for three months, which means that Queensland halfback Will Genia will captain the side.

All Blacks hooker Keven Mealamu said that while Pocock was a big loss, there was expectation that the Wallabies wouldn't lose too much at the breakdown.

"They'd lose a menace at the breakdown and a good leader," he said.

"They've got a lot of depth there so they'll just bring through someone who is young and probably bring that sort of enthusiasm."

Former Brumby Hooper has already earned three test caps, playing off the bench against Scotland and Wales, and is considered to have the edge compared to Reds fetcher Liam Gill.

"They are both good players. Obviously Michael has got more background with us," Deans said.

"Liam hasn't had a start yet, so that probably gives Michael the advantage."

Gill however was one of the Reds forwards of the season, captaining the Austrailan Under-20 team during the recent Junior World Cup in South Africa.
