The glamour clash of the weekend came with Taranaki hosting Canterbury, arguably their strongest challenger to the Ranfurly Shield so far, but the amber and blacks defensively were too good, holding the defending champions from crossing their try line in a 18-9 win at Yarrow Stadium.
Bay of Plenty continued their climb of the bottom of the table with a stirring 37-16 win over Auckland in Rotorua, while Wellington (29-13 over Waikato) and Southland (35-7 over Hawke's Bay) were other winners in front of their home crowds.
The latter was Jimmy Cowan's 100th game for Southland.
Manawatu (23-20 over North Harbour) and Northland (20-17 over Tasman) recorded crucial away wins.
The biggest margin of the weekend came from the Steelers comprehensive 43-12 win over Otago, with Tana Umaga's troops putting in a 30 point unanswered second half.
