Today further bad news broke with the confirmation that Wallabies wonderkid James O'Connor will not complete his recovery in time to feature, with the Melbourne Rebels based star tweeting that he had to continue recovering over the summer.
But it is not the lack of outside backs that seems to be troubling Deans as much as the quality in his playing axis, with reports in the Sydney Morning Herald confirming that the Wallabies coach had contacted Toulouse based halfback Luke Burgess for a possible return to the Australian test playing ranks, with the absence of Will Genia robbing the team of one of their few world class players.
However for this to occur, senior figures with the Australian Rugby Union would have to back down on a domestic selection policy which is also applied by the All Blacks.
"It would be a big precedent (selecting an overseas player)," he said.
"It would be something that, if they considered it, they (the ARU board) wouldn't take lightly."
"More importantly we've got a couple of good blokes here. Brett Sheehan's stepped in and done a great job. He's been fantastic within the group, and (Melbourne Rebels halfback Nick Phipps) is responding to the challenge superbly."
Of further interest is the fact that Toulon based first five-eighth Matt Giteau has allegedly smoked the peace pipe with Deans and is ready to offer his services if required..
Giteau wasn't selected for the Wallabies 2011 Rugby World Cup squad which led to the star taking to social media to voice his displeasure, but it has been confirmed by Wallabies team management that he had contacted Deans.
Toulon have said in the past they would work with national unions to release players, but again the ARU would need to change it's current selection policies.
