While the team maintains their lead in the world series, they came fourth in the USA.

England were too strong in the final for the hosts 29-12, and showed how strong they were with back to back wins over the Kiwi Women.

Australia, another of the six core teams for the four leg Women's Series, defeated New Zealand 17-12 in the battle for third place.

Russia won the Plate with a 29-10 over the Netherlands (the host of the fourth leg), while Brazil won the Bowl with 12-7 win over Japan.

Horan said it was important the New Zealand Women's team, essentially a side with two years together, grow and make sure they saw the glass half full aspect of the situation.

"Every time we come to a tournament we take positives from it," he said.

"We are a pretty new team and we are gaining experience.

We are disappointed not to win of course but we need to get experience to get that defining edge. This has been a really good tournament and we have enjoyed the stadium and the surroundings.

Horan said it wasn't a harsh reality check, with the close nature of Sevens proving that no team could take anything for granted.

"We have to keep learning at this level and we know we are going to lose games at Sevens tournaments," he said.
