The Blues, who recorded their worst season in 2011, have started this season strongly, banking ten competition points in two full houses against the Hurricanes and the Crusaders.
The 34-15 victory over the red and blacks was even more impressive for the fact they held the Crusaders scoreless while scoring five tries of their own.
Many observers note Sir Graham Henry’s influence on the team, with Kieran Read noting the impact the former All Blacks coach was having, but the straight running and high levels of confidence are more of a hallmark of Kirwan’s reign as one of world rugby’s best outside men.
Kirwan said that he wouldn’t have imagined him and captain Ali Williams talking about a perfect start late last year.
"If you had of said to Ali and I when we were sitting having a cup of tea talking about him being captain and me being coach three months ago and said you'll be 10 points after your first two games,” Kirwan said to Newstalk ZB.
“(Then) we would have probably felt a million dollars."
