McCaw, who made his first Test appearance of the season, put in a typically strong performance where initial viewings would have shown a solid game from the World Champions.

Yet the scoreboard flattered a rather one-sided statistical sheet, with the Wallabies dominating most of the key categories.

The All Blacks captain, who proved all doubters wrong with a match that belied his lack of match fitness, said the beginning of the week was about a bit of soul searching.

"First thing was we were pretty honest about our performance last week,” McCaw said.

“The scoreboard looked okay, but there were things we weren't happy with."

"We made sure we didn't just gloss over them. The first couple of days the boys went about their work to hopeful rectify those things."

As is McCaw’s mantra, he said the crucial part of the team’s build up was getting the small details right throughout the preparation.

"I think the attitude has been pretty good,” the skipper, on the eve of his 118th Test, said.

“The guys, especially the guys who have been around a while, understand if you don't get the prep right things can change real quick."
