Buller, the current holders of the Lochore Cup, were the most convincing winners as they recorded victory number two for the season, winning 28-12 over Meads Cup holders East Coast.

Far from a battle of the champions, the win move Buller into sixth spot, while East Coast sit second to last on the table.

Indeed, the balance of power has shifted, with Poverty Bay, four time winners of the Lochore Cup, still to notch their opening win of the season.

Mid Canterbury, top of the table by points difference only - one of three teams on 14 competition points - lost a nailbiter in Oamaru 19-18.
