With the All Blacks Sevens team dominating attention back home, Horan said their focus was very much on growing as a team and gaining experience.
"In terms of development, we are still new compared to other countries like England, Netherlands and Canada but the team has been working hard and we're excited about playing in Houston.
"I expect other teams will be assessing where other countries are at with their programmes, and eyeing up what the competition might look like as we all head toward the World Cup in Moscow later this year and building to the Rio Olympics," Horan said.
Horan said with the inclusion of five 2012 Black Ferns, the team was also focussed on developing a good culture and work ethic.
"We know that a lot of the teams at this tournament will be feeling each other out. We are still finding out our own strengths and weaknesses and we know what areas we want to focus on at this tournament.
"This is a unique series, and this tournament is unique and the team is pretty excited about getting out there for our first hit out against Trinidad Tobago tomorrow."

Whistle duties for New Zealander
Meanwhile, 21-year-old physiotheraphy student Jessica Beard from Counties Manukau is also in Houston to represent New Zealand with the whistle. Beard made her first class refereeing debut in the 2012 Women's Provincial Championship and she quickly progressed to the Dubai Sevens last year and now Houston.
