Boric, who has been making a long recovery from neck surgery, will take his final steps on Friday, playing in a practice match, with a view to have the former All Blacks lock suit up in the next month.

Unlike other seasons, the Blues have an empty casualty ward to kick off the campaign, something head coach Sir John Kirwan acknowledged was in their favour.

"We're feeling pretty lucky about that," he said to Radiosport.

"We knew about AB (Boric) when we started so we're feeling good about that anyway."

The Blues and Hurricanes are expected to name their starting line-ups on Thursday.
