Ranger last played with the All Blacks in 2010, but his form for the Blues this season has him in All Blacks calculations.
However Ranger has been linked to a move to France, with Montpellier seeming the most likely club, but this shift is not set in concrete, and Hansen said if Ranger was selected he hoped it would play a part in his future decisions.
"If we end up selecting him and then he left to go to France that would be disappointing," Hansen said to the NZ Herald.
"But at this stage he hasn't signed anything officially to go. We'll have to wait and see."
Hansen did say again that overseas shifts were not the focus for selection meetings, it was about ensuring the best players were on the park.
"What we've got to concentrate on is picking the best team that we can pick" the All Blacks coach said.
"He's playing particularly well at the moment so he's certainly put his hand up."
With Richard Kahui and Cory Jane injured, Hansen felt the All Blacks biggest selection concern was in the outside backs.
"It's probably our back three," Hansen said.
"With the likes of Kahui and Jane both being injured. We've got one or two slots up for grabs there."
