Australian-born and 30-years-old, Abel, a hooker, played for the Brumbies and Force before joining the Rebels for seven games last year.

He was a member of the Auckland Mitre 10-Cup winning side in 2018 and has made 17 appearances for the side. His longest stint in Super Rugby was with the Brumbies from 2016-18 during which time he played 36 games.

Abel has spread his time between Australia and New Zealand, playing for Northland B in 2009 and 2012, those seasons straddling a stint on missionary work for the Mormon Church in Western Australia.

He played nine games for Northland in 2013, nine games for Perth Spirit in 2014 and 34 games for the Canberra Vikings in 2015-17. A former Australia A schools player, he was selected in the Maori All Blacks in 2018.

"I've been to a few teams so I've kind of become a bit of a gypsy footy player so I'm always open to opportunities and exploring new things and being in this environment," he told rugby.com.au.

"It suits me to be able to bring something new to the team and things like that.

"I've learned a lot along the way from different teams and different franchises. I like to stay very open-minded so I look to continue to learn and grow and I'm here and I'm loving that, doing that every day here, so it's great.

"It's a young pack but that's the exciting thing about it, being a little bit older those young kids definitely give me a fair bit of energy and I love throwing a little bit of chat around with the young boys here.

"I just look to bring the things that I've learned along the way.

"Hopefully that sometimes can give a calming voice to some of those young boys who are really good players and [are] going to be the stars of the future.

"So, hopefully there's something that they can take away from the older boys in the group and the way they go about their days," he said.

The Waratahs play their first warm-up game against the Highlanders at Leichhardt Oval in Sydney on Friday and their first Super Rugby game of the campaign is against the Crusaders in Christchurch on February 1.
