Scoreless in their first day loss to Samoa, they started the second day with a 38-14 win over Hong Kong with Ngahori McGarvey-Black scoring in the first minute to be followed by Sam Dickson, Regan Ware, Amanaki Nicole, Akuila Rokolisoa and Sione Molia.

But as the result of a stunning Australian first half through tries to James Turner, Dietrich Roache, Maurice Longbottom, they led 17-7 and then Nathan Lawson scored in the first minute of the second half, the New Zealanders couldn't break the defences.

Moses Leo had scored in the first half, but by the time Molia scored in the 12th minute it was too late. Leroy Carter scored a consolation injury-time try but Australia closed New Zealand out.

Australia also fell to Samoa 17-22. Samoa claimed first place in the pool and will play Argentina in their quarterfinal. Australia will play Ireland while Fiji, looking to win their sixth consecutive Hong Kong tournament will play South Africa. The last quarterfinal is between France and the USA.

New Zealand wasn't the only top side to miss out as Great Britain also failed to qualify, missing out to South Africa on points differential in their pool.
