Canterbury cruised to a 45-5 win over Waikato on Sunday and with Auckland's win, also with a four-try bonus point, both sides share the lead on 25 points.
Third-placed Wellington had the bye this round.
In the Championship section Otago moved to the lead when beating Hawke's Bay 34-26 with both teams scoring four-try bonus points. They are well clear of their chasing rivals of whom Northland retained third place with a 35-29 win over Tasman while North Harbour's 33-21 over Taranaki moved it into fourth place.
