Barrett said achieving his 100th Test meant many things to him. During the week, he had thought about all the people who had contributed to his career.

It was also nice to achieve a good performance in memory of his wife Hannah's grandfather, the former Auckland captain and centurion Bob Graham who died last week.

"He was an exceptional man, a man I got close to since meeting Han. He was like another grandfather for me up in Auckland. But he had a very creditable rugby career, captaining Auckland for a number of years and a centurion for Auckland rugby in a [Ranfurly] Shield era when they were very staunch and competitive.

"He touched me in my life, it's tough being away from family when things like this happen. It's the second time I've lost someone close to me when I've been away," he said.

His All Blacks family had helped him a lot, he said.

He completed two intercepts at either end of the game to take his total of Test tries to 39. But another attempted intercept was scrutinised by the match officials. On that occasion, he felt he had left his attempt to take the ball a little late. He said those considerations had gone either way in the past in terms of a yellow card. But it was a gamble he took, and he felt the right decision was made.

The week had been one of reminiscence, and there was a time during the game during a break when he was able to reflect, and he said Principality Stadium was a special place to achieve his milestone.

But he felt the events around him detracted a little from his preparation during the week.

"I had a lot on my mind. I just wanted to go out there and enjoy it and play well and enjoy the moment because it is such a cool place to play my 100th," he said.

Barrett said he looked at the game differently compared to when he started. Attack had been his main thought then.

But extra responsibility in terms of experience in rugby and life showed him there was a bigger picture.

"I do things for different reasons now, my purpose is different. It's all part of growing up I think but I'm still very driven and determined. I've got plenty left in the tank," he said.
