The former All Blacks coach was given his title in the New Year’s Honours earlier this year, alongside former New Zealand Rugby chief executive Steve Tew, who became an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM).
Hansen was granted his investiture by Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy in front of loved ones and also 13 other participants at the Christchurch ceremony.
He was recognised for a remarkable career in coaching which saw him play a critical role in the back-to-back World Cup victories in 2011 and 2015. Hansen made an exceptional contribution to the game and was named World Rugby’s best coach in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016. Under his watch, the All Blacks were named World Rugby’s team of the year from 2012 to 2017.
Hansen is currently the director of rugby at Toyota Verblitz in the Japanese Top League and will return once the competition resumes.
