The Kiwis had all the ball in the opening two minutes. Some slick passing and plenty of patience eventually saw them breakthrough. Regan Ware got close, but a quick recycle saw Scott Curry score under the posts.

Great Britain struck back in quick succession however, with Dan Norton sprinting his way to the try line, as he has done so much in his illustrious career.

It was a clinical first half from both sides, but it was New Zealand who went into the break with a 14-7 lead thanks to a break from Sione Molia who offloaded to Regan Ware to score, albeit very close to the in-goal line.

New Zealand, through Ware again, stretched their lead three minutes into the second spell, but it was the next try that was textbook. The restart kick from Andrew Knewstubb was pinpoint to Dylan Collier who claimed it to sprint his way to the try-line.

Curry was immense in the semifinal, huge on defence and strong on attack. He scored his second with less than a minute to go, securing his side’s spot in the Gold medal match.

The co-captain delighted with the way his side played against a tough Great Britain outfit.

“That was a real clinical performance if I’m being honest. That first half we were so patient with the ball, we just backed our ball carriers, slowly worked our way up the field and then we finished up with some points, so it was awesome from us.”

He said preparation is now key for the all-important final.

“First things first is to get in the ice and try and cool down as fast as we can. Get some fuel on board and eat a good meal. It’s a long break so we need to get a good meal in and fuel up for the next one.”

New Zealand will face Fiji in the Gold medal match at 9pm NZT tonight, live on Sky Sport NZ.
