Rivalry in Numbers: Chiefs v Crusaders

35: Is the number of matches the Chiefs and Crusaders have played since the Super Rugby competition was established in 1996.


955: The Crusaders have scored a total of 955 points against the Chiefs, that’s 200 more than their Waikato rivals, who have scored 755 in return.


14: The Chiefs have gone onto win 14 games against the Crusaders in their history and the two sides have never had to settle for a draw. That leaves the Crusaders with 21 total victories.


1: Just the one point separated the Chiefs and Crusaders in their first ever match-up at what was formally known as Rugby Park in Hamilton. On the 3rd of March in 1996 the Chiefs came out on top, 27-26.



1708: That’s the number of points Crusaders pivot Dan Carter finished his Super Rugby career with. He remains the all-time leading points scorer in the history of the competition.


57: It was only last year that the Crusaders piled on 57 points against the Chiefs. It was the most points they’ve scored against the Waikato club.


162: The Chiefs made a round-high 162 tackles during their opening round of Super Rugby this year. It was in their opening game against the against the Blues, which they won 37-29 at Eden Park.


9: Is the number of rookies the Chiefs have in their squad this year. That’s just three less than the Crusaders who have 12 newbies.


106: One of those Crusaders rookies is Tom Christie. The former New Zealand Under 20s flanker made a remarkable start to his debut Super Rugby season in 2020, and up until the competition was suspended, he had made the most tackles with 106.


202: Crusaders prop Wyatt Crockett is the most capped player in Super Rugby history, having retired in 2018 with 202 appearances for the Christchurch club. Chiefs stalwart Liam Messam is second on the list, with 179 caps.
