Nothing firm has yet emerged about the staging of the series, whether it will be played in South Africa, or contested in Britain and Ireland due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Key games in the consideration of potential players will be staged this weekend in the Currie Cup semifinals in South Africa.

Steyn's Bulls are to play the Lions, who feature one of the incumbent Bok five-eighths Elton Jantjies, in Pretoria.

Another five-eighths contender Curwin Bosch is playing for the Sharks against Western Province in the other semifinal.

Steyn hasn't played Test rugby since being dropped in 2016. That came after a poor game in a 15-57 loss to the All Blacks.

Critics say it would take a complete performance in a decisive Bulls victory for Steyn to be a genuine prospect for a Test recall.

But since returning to Pretoria from France where he played 109 times for Stade Français, Steyn has revealed greater versatility in his play. Instead of his traditional kicking game, he has been a key link in rejuvenating the Bulls backline.

There's also the small matter of his goal-kicking ability where he holds the record for most points by a South African player of 736 scored in 66 Tests.

Steyn told South African media he was still interested in playing Test rugby.

"It will always be a case of you wanting to be better than your opponent, and while you are playing rugby in South Africa, that dream will always be there to play for the Springboks.

"I told myself that I didn't take myself out of Springbok rugby, so every game is a game to prove myself again. And it doesn't matter how many Tests you have played, it is always about wanting to be the best, and to play for your country again," he said.

"I am looking forward to playing against Elton. [It's] Always a good battle between me and him, and he has also had a good year up to now.

"Maybe I can still sign on for another year or two."

Steyn made his Test debut in 2009, playing against the Lions, marking the occasion with a match-winning long-range penalty goal on his home ground, Loftus Versfeld.
