The 27-year old was impressive for the Blues in Super Rugby up until the break, having scored one try, making 37 carriers, 66 meters and beating seven defenders in his six matches.

Tuipulotu told Sky Sports’ Breakdown that he’s made some changes to his fitness regime.

“My strength and conditioning plan made up by Phil Healey and Nic Gill was really good for me going into the World Cup last year. I had a big focus on keeping fit during the big break after the World Cup, which is where I seemed to let myself down in the past. I’m proud to say I kept fit and that was paying dividends during the season.”

The 30-Test All Black is enjoying being captain at the Blues and has found his feet in the role this season.

“It’s a big collaboration really. I think last year was tough doing it with two [captains], but with a bigger group now and the support of Rieko Ioane, James Parsons and Tom Robinson in our leadership group it makes it easier on myself.

“In saying that, I’m a calm guy so I find I can see two sides to everything. I base my actions and decisions on that and pride myself on that, and luckily it has been going well for us.”

Like all the Super Rugby sides, and most sports teams around the world, the Blues are having to stay connected in different ways. Tuipulotu said they have been given plenty of helpful guidelines to assist them in getting through this difficult period.

“It’s obviously tough what’s going on, but our whole team has managed to get on a Zoom call a couple of times. We’ve been connecting through that and we are connecting in terms of people posting their training [sessions]. We are all getting around each other, without being around each other. It’s tough, but in times like these you just have to get through.”

Tuipulotu said his pantry is looking pretty normal at the moment, as the country heads into a four-week lockdown. He’s shopped normally and he and his partner, Silver Fern Phoenix Karaka, have set up a home gym in the garage, so they are ready to go.
