THE VERSATILE AND strong Atu Moli, who plays both sides of the scrum, was first called into the All Blacks squad as a non-playing apprentice during the 2017 Investec Rugby Championship and then went on to make his All Blacks debut against a France XV on that year’s Northern Tour.
Moli went to Marlborough Boys' College in Blenheim and made provincial age grade teams there before moving to Waikato after school. In 2015 he captained the champion New Zealand Under 20 team and made his Waikato provincial debut, winning the team’s emerging player award.
After just six games at provincial level, Moli made the Chiefs Super Rugby squad in 2016 and went from strength to strength over the next two years, culminating in his All Blacks call-up.
An innocuous knock to his leg in the opening match of the 2018 Super season led to a horror year, with the haematoma leading to four surgeries and a long road to recovery. An excited Moli returned to Super Rugby in 2019 looking to make up for lost time, helping the team through to the top eight.
