FROM BEACH volleyball to rugby, it seems Kelsie Wills excels at whatever sport she puts her mind to.
Off some interesting life experiences in France and the USA, Wills trained like a fulltime athlete as firstly an indoor volleyballer and then a beach volleyballer. She was good enough to reach the quarter-finals of the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the latter.
After just two seasons in rugby as a fast-learning athletic lock, she has risen rapidly into Black Ferns’ calculations. In 2019, she played six games for the Bay of Plenty Volcanix in the Farah Palmer Cup, and impressed the right people to then play two games for the New Zealand Development XV in Fiji.
The Mt Maunganui Sports player racked up another four games for the Volcanix in 2020, scoring two tries, and continuing her good progress. This promoted her to the Probables squad to face the Possibles, locking the scrum with the seasoned Eloise Blackwell.
She doesn’t have far to turn for any technical advice about forwards play.
