Will Jordan has rewritten the All Blacks record books, scoring a hat-trick against Italy in Wellington to become New Zealand’s leading Test try-scorer.

Jordan’s hat-trick makes All Blacks history

Jordan entered the Nations Championship Test needing two tries to equal Doug Howlett’s long-standing record of 49 and three to claim it outright.

He delivered all three.

The 28-year-old crossed once before halftime and added two more during a decisive second-half surge as the All Blacks pulled away for a 47-17 victory. His hat-trick lifted him to 50 tries from just 56 Tests and made him the first All Black to reach the milestone.

Jordan’s opening try took him to 48 before debutant Josh Moorby gave him the pass to draw level with Howlett on 49. The historic moment followed soon after, with Ruben Love taking a quick penalty and Jordie Barrett firing a long pass to Jordan, who beat the final defender to score his record-breaking 50th Test try.

A remarkable rise to the top

Howlett’s record had stood since 2007 after the prolific wing scored 49 tries across 62 Tests. Jordan has surpassed that mark in six fewer appearances, underlining the extraordinary strike rate that has defined his international career.

Since making his All Blacks debut against Australia in 2020, Jordan has established himself as one of the most lethal finishers in world rugby. His pace, anticipation and ability to remain connected to the play have allowed him to score from almost anywhere on the field.

The Wellington hat-trick also elevated Jordan into seventh place among the leading men’s international Test try-scorers of all time. Of the players inside the top 10, only Japan great Daisuke Ohata has scored tries at a higher rate per Test.

With Jordan still only 28 and firmly established in the All Blacks backline, New Zealand’s new benchmark could rise considerably higher.
