Holland, 53, resigned from his role as Hurricanes head coach to join Scott Robertson's All Blacks coaching team in 2024, but announced before the 2025 northern tour that he would step down once the tour was completed.

Holland will join Jamie Mackintosh, Cory Jane, Brad Cooper and Bryn Evans as assistant coaches under Clark Laidlaw in the Wellington-based side.

Holland was an assistant coach from 2016-19, sharing in the 2016 Super Rugby triumph, and head coach from 2020-23.

He said he was grateful for the opportunity to return to the side.

"It's been awesome working alongside a great group of staff and players in the first few days since I've been back. They've created an exciting brand of Hurricanes rugby, so I'm expecting the upcoming season to be a lot of fun."

Holland had an extensive playing career with Manawatū and Taranaki in NPC rugby before joining Munster and making more than 100 appearances for the side.

Holland began his coaching career at Munster as an assistant coach between 2008-12. In that time, Munster won the Heineken Cup, two Celtic League titles and a British and Irish Cup.

He returned to New Zealand as an assistant coach with Canterbury in 2013.

Laidlaw said, "We're excited to have Alfie [Holland] return to the club and assist us for the season ahead.

"He has a wealth of experience, not only at the Hurricanes as a head coach and attack coach, but also in the last couple of years with the All Blacks.

"We feel that with his experience, ability, and knowledge to help us with our attacking game, he'll be a huge asset.

"With the squad going up to 50 players during pre-season, we were looking for a coach to come in and help. The timing and opportunity for Alfie to come in, and his excitement and enthusiasm for the role, were too good to miss.

"As head coach, having someone who has been a head coach of a Super Rugby side, and understands the demands of that, gives us a second pair of eyes around our environment week-to-week.

"We're looking forward to building our relationship within our coaching team throughout pre-season to assist the players."
