New Zealand U21 Women's claim historic victory over Australia U21
The hosts wasted little time making their mark, with centre Ella Henderson throwing a dummy before powering over the line inside the opening five minutes. Emacyn Ieremia was unable to add the extras, but New Zealand had an early 5-0 advantage.
Australia responded with pressure of their own, testing the Kiwi defence before eventually finding a breakthrough. A slick team move from the back of a scrum saw winger Lily Gillett finish in the corner, with Waiaria Ellis unable to convert.
However, New Zealand quickly regained control. Lialanie Muamua found space out wide, stepping on the accelerator to leave the Australian defence trailing before crossing for the hosts' second try. The winger was at it again almost immediately, bursting through the defence from the restart to complete a rapid-fire double and extend New Zealand's lead.
Mundell seals commanding 24-5 half-time lead
Amber Mundell added another before the break, charging down an Australian kick, regathering possession and powering over beneath the posts. Ieremia added the conversion to give New Zealand a commanding 24-5 lead at half-time.
The hosts carried that momentum into the second half, producing another impressive team effort to send Sariyah Paitai over in the corner. Ieremia made no mistake from the tee, extending New Zealand's advantage.
New Zealand continued to stretch the Australian defence, working the ball across the full width of the pitch before Presayus Singh finished in the corner. Poppy Baxter, who had taken over kicking duties, was unable to add the extras.
Su’a-Smith try caps historic U21 win
Australia refused to go quietly, with Gillett finding her way over for her second try of the afternoon late in the final quarter. Replacement kicker Maronay Smuts came agonisingly close with the conversion, but the attempt drifted just short.
There was still time for one final New Zealand flourish. Moving the ball confidently through the hands, the hosts found Kiera Su'a-Smith in the far corner to add another try. Baxter made no mistake with the conversion, stretching the lead to 33 points.
Australia pushed hard in the closing stages in search of another score, but New Zealand held firm to deny the visitors.
A historic first meeting between the two sides ended in emphatic fashion, with New Zealand U21 delivering a statement performance on home soil in Christchurch.
